The 33rd USHLI National Conference will be held February 12-15, 2015, at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers in Chicago, IL. We want to encourage as many groups of 10 to pre-register and pre-pay before the deadline as possible, which is December 31.  Groups of 10 that pre-register and pre-pay before the deadline will be automatically entered into a raffle. The winning group of 10 will receive a full refund and attend the national conference as our guests, including VIP seating at all food functions!  
  
We are expecting a full house again this year of 6,000-7,000 present and future leaders representing 40 states.  As in years past, over 81% will be 18-34 years of age, over 60% will be women, and over 89% will be college students or recent graduates.  It's going to be a great celebration featuring nationally prominent speakers, expert presenters, exhibits, and great entertainment.

Nearly 3,300 Attend Ford Driving Dreams Tour


Nearly 3,300 Attend 
Ford Driving Dreams Tour - Ford Partners with USHLI & ASPIRA IL, Inc. in Chicago, IL and East Chicago, IN
Ford Motor Company Fund partnered with USHLI and ASPIRA Illinois, Inc. to launch the Ford Driving Dreams Tour. The Tour included seven high schools in Chicago and East Chicago. Approximately 3,245 students, teachers, counselors, administrators, and school board members attended.

  
Scholarships totaling $50,000 will be awarded to students at participating schools. Schools will also receive $25,000 in grants to help defray the costs of campus visits and other costs incurred in the process of exposing interested students to more post-secondary opportunities. Students will also compete in an essay writing contest to be eligible to win a$5,000 scholarship as well as other prizes including tablets. All scholarship recipients and essay winners and their parents will be recognized at USHLI's National Conference on February 13, 2015.

The events featured nationally prominent motivational speaker Roy Juarez, Jr., a favorite among students of all ages from middle school to college.


Mr. Joedis Avila, Community Outreach Manager at the Ford Motor Company Fund, also addressed the students and presented a check to each participating school.  USHLI is very grateful to the Ford Motor Company and the Ford Motor Company Fund for its generous sponsorship of the Ford Driving Dreams Tour, as well as the leadership at all participating schools. USHLI also appreciates the extensive media coverage received including television, radio, and print.

An estimated 245 students, parents and educators attended USHLI Student Leadership Series (SLS) events held in Hendersonville, NC at Blue Ridge Community College and in Lenoir, NC at Kinston-Lenoir Public Library. USHLI is very grateful for the leadership and cooperation provided by the Migrant Education Program and the ESL Department in both counties.

The events featured Andres Lara, The Cuban Guy, a nationally prominent motivational speaker who is a favorite among students of all ages from middle school to college.

Ulises Ornelas Jose Magaña & Jacqueline Torres Receive $1,000 Scholarships
USHLI has awarded over $1.3 million in scholarships and internships to Latino college students. With affordability being one of the main reasons many Latinos are unable to complete their post-secondary education or training, USHLI tries to help students stay in school and graduate by raising money for scholarships.


USHLI is proud to partner with the Ford Blue Oval Scholars program. Twenty (20) Latino students attending 17 colleges or universities in 8 states have been selected to receive scholarships in 2014. Students must demonstrate strong leadership potential and the need for financial support must be equally strong.  Also, additional consideration is given to students who are the first in their family to graduate high school or the first to pursue post-secondary education or training. 

Two of our scholarship recipients are Ulises Ornelas Jose Magaña and Jacqueline Torres. Ulises is a senior at the University of St. Francis and majoring in Social Science and History. Jaqueline is a freshman attending University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and majors in Liberal Arts & Sciences.

USHLI continues to be the premier national organization empowering Latino youth by engaging students in nonpartisan civic participation and leadership development, and promoting education. Over 490,000 high school and college students have participated in USHLI's education programs including Students for an Educated Democracy, Citizens for an Educated Democracy, Student Leadership Series, Collegiate Leadership Development, Grassroots Leadership Development, and 21st Century Leaders/MillerCoors Scholars.

In addition, USHLI has registered over 2.3 million new voters and published over 425 studies and reports on Latino demographics. In 2012 USHLI was recognized as the National Organization of the Year.

McDonald's and USHLI continued its 2014 series of Student Leadership Summits in Houston, TX.  The event, held at Stephen Austin High School, was attended by approximately 1850 students, teachers and counselors.

The event featured two nationally prominent motivational speakers, Carlos Ojeda and Ernesto Mejia from CoolSpeak, and a Career and College Recruitment Fair.  The Career and College Recruitment Fair featured a Study Lounge sponsored by McDonald's, where students received useful information on scholarships and preparing for college. Eighteen (18) recruiters representing post-secondary institutions at every level participated. 

Ms. Mariselle Quijano, a local McDonald's owner/operator, addressed the students as well.  USHLI is very grateful to the local leadership for its assistance and to McDonald's for its generous sponsorship of this series of Student Leadership Summits.  Complimentary apple slices and water were served.

An estimated 2,376 students, parents and educators attended USHLI Student Leadership Series (SLS) events held in Tucson at Cholla High Magnet School and Pueblo Magnet High School. USHLI is very grateful for the leadership and cooperation provided by Holly Colonna, director of guidance counseling and student services/prevention programs at the Tucson Unified school district

The events featured Jaime Carias, a nationally prominent motivational speaker who is a favorite among students of all ages from middle school to college. Our SLS Honorary Co-Chair, The United States Army, brought opening remarks.


The SLS is USHLI's flagship youth program.  The program is designed to motivate students to improve their academic performance, graduate and pursue some level of post-secondary education.  An estimated 76,691 have been served to date this year in 15 states.

McDonald's-USHLI Series of Student Leadership Summits Continues in Miami, FL
McDonald's and USHLI continued its 2014 series of Student Leadership Summits in Miami, FL.  The event, held at Miami Senior High School, was attended by approximately 1,800 students, teachers and counselors.

The event featured two nationally prominent motivational speakers, Carlos Ojeda, Jr. and Ernesto Mejia from CoolSpeak, and a Career and College Recruitment Fair.  The Career and College Recruitment Fair featured a Study Lounge sponsored by McDonald's, where students received useful information on scholarships and preparing for college.  Seventeen (17) recruiters representing post-secondary institutions at every level participated.  Complimentary apple slices were served. 
  

Ms. Yoyi Rodriguez, a local McDonald's owner/operator, addressed the students as well.  USHLI is very grateful to Dr. Lawrence Feldman, ViceChair of the Board of Education; Mr. Alberto Carvalho, Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public School District; Dr. Albert Payne, Central Region Superintendent; the Principal Mr. Benny Valdes, and the entire team atMiami Senior High School for their leadership and invaluable assistance.  USHLI also appreciates McDonald's generous sponsorship of this series of Student Leadership Summits.

McDonald's and USHLI continued its 2014 series of Student Leadership Summits in New York, NY. The event, held at George Washington Educational Campus, was attended by approximately 1,100 students, teachers and counselors.


The event featured two nationally prominent motivational speakers, Carlos Ojeda and Ernesto Mejia from CoolSpeak, and a Career and College Recruitment Fair.  The Career and College Recruitment Fair featured a Study Lounge sponsored by McDonald's, where students received useful information on scholarships and preparing for college. Seventeen (17) recruiters representing post-secondary institutions at every level participated.  
  

Ms. Ana Madan, a local McDonald's owner/operator, addressed the students as well. USHLI is very grateful to the local leadership for its assistance and to McDonald's for its generous sponsorship of this series of Student Leadership Summits.  Complimentary apple slices and yogurt were served.

McDonald's-USHLI Series of Student Leadership Summits Continues in Minneapolis, MN 
McDonald's and USHLI continued its 2014 series of Student Leadership Summits in Minneapolis, MN.  The event, held at Roosevelt High School, was attended by approximately 1,300 students, teachers and counselors.  Students from Wellstone International High School and El Colegio Charter School also attended.

The event featured two nationally prominent motivational speakers, Carlos Ojeda and Ernesto Mejia from CoolSpeak, and a Career and College Recruitment Fair. The Career and College Recruitment Fair featured a Study Lounge sponsored by McDonald's, where students received useful information on scholarships and preparing for college.  Thirty-seven (37) recruiters representing post-secondary institutions at every level participated.  
  

Mr. Oscar Binder, a local McDonald's owner/operator, addressed the students as well. USHLI is very grateful to Mr. Michael Bradley, the Principal at Roosevelt High School, and the entire team at Roosevelt High School for their leadership and invaluable assistance, and to McDonald's for its generous sponsorship of this series of Student Leadership Summits. McDonald's and USHLI continued its 2014 series of Student Leadership Summits in Lawrence, MA.  The event, held at Lawrence High School, was attended by approximately 600 students, teachers and counselors.

The event featured two nationally prominent motivational speakers, Carlos Ojeda and Ernesto Mejia from CoolSpeak. The summit featured a study lounge sponsored by McDonald's where students received useful information on scholarships and preparing for college.  Complimentary apple slices and water were served.

  

Karina Gonzalez, a Boston Region Financial Analyst from McDonald's, addressed the students as well. USHLI is very grateful to Richard Gorham, English Department Chair at Lawrence High School and his colleagues for their leadership and invaluable assistance, and to McDonald's for its generous sponsorship of this series of Student Leadership Summits.

 Over 1,200 Students and Educators Attend Student Leadership Series Events in Indiana


An estimated 1,277 students and educators attended USHLI Student Leadership Series (SLS) events held in Lake County.  USHLI is very grateful for the leadership and cooperation provided by administrators at Gavit High School and Whiting High School that hosted events.

The featured speaker was USHLI President Dr. Juan Andrade, who has earned five college degrees including a doctorate, received five honorary doctorates, and is the 4th Latino in history to be decorated by both the President of the United States and the Government of Mexico.


The SLS is USHLI's flagship youth program.  Our goal in 2014 is to serve 200,000 students, parents, and educators in 30 states and help in Creating a Culture of Education.  The program is designed to motivate students to improve their academic performance, graduate and pursue some level of post-secondary education.  An estimated 72,515 have been served to date this year in 10 states.

The SLS program focuses on Stay-in-School Rallies for middle school and high school students, Career & College Recruitment FairsRegional Leadership Summits for college students, Parent Involvement Workshopsfor parents, and Professional Development for educators.

An estimated 4,830 students and educators attended USHLI Student Leadership Series (SLS) events held in Cicero, IL.  USHLI is very grateful for the leadership and cooperation provided by administrators at Morton East High School, the Freshman Center, and Unity Jr. High School that hosted events.



 

 

The featured speaker was Roy Juarez, Jr., one of the top motivational speakers in the nation and a favorite among students of all ages from middle school to college.  Our guest speaker was Zenaida Lorenzo, who recently joined the USHLI team.

 Dr. Juan Andrade Addresses Leaders in Lansing, Michigan 
USHLI President, Dr. Juan Andrade, addressed civic and community leaders as well as clergy, academicians, and students attending the 16th Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration and 19th Annual César E. Chavez Commemorative Dinner in Lansing, MI.

The Heritage Month Celebration and Commemorative Dinner was organized by the Hispanic/Latino Commission of Michigan, led by its Executive Director Mary Lou Mason and Board Chair Gil Guzman.  About the organizers Dr. Andrade said, "Mary Lou Mason is the longest serving and most respected executive director of a Hispanic/Latino commission in the nation.  I know them all and can say that without qualification.  She is one of USHLI's strongest and most influential allies and it has been a privilege to have her guidance and advice on our work in the Latino community throughout the state of Michigan."

Leadership awards and scholarships were also presented at the event.  It was a pleasure to participate in this great event and fantastic program.
